E6 - Is shared parenting a good idea in high conflict divorces? Interview with Dr. William Fabricius

In today’s episode, we ask, Is shared parenting a good idea in high conflict divorces? I interview Dr. William Fabricius as he discusses his research on shared parenting in cases where the parents are in high conflict.  He also talks about how educating lawyers, legislators, and judges in Arizona helped reform their family law statutes.

William Fabricius is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University. He is interested in the role of father-child relationships in protecting children’s mental and physical health. He does research on young children’s cognitive and social-cognitive development. He’s worked with stakeholders at the state level in Arizona to translate knowledge about father-child relationships into evidence-based social policy for divorced and never-married parents. This resulted in 2013 legislation establishing a de facto presumption for equal parenting time and decision-making. He also advises other countries (Canada, Japan, Denmark) and other US states on similar legislation.
